Glasgow Central railway station welcomes COP26 attendees and passengers with a campaign that showcases the rail industry’s green achievements

The COP26 summit runs from Tuesday the 2nd to Friday the 12th of November with those visiting able to enjoy driving a train simulator at the Rail Delivery Group‘s (RDG) green and sustainable stand, which is on the station concourse.

The striking green and white moss-covered carriage will welcome visitors and offer them the chance to take the driver’s seat of an electric Class 314 train.

A simulated train journey between Pollockshields East and Glasgow Central station will give visitors the chance to experience what it is like driving an electric train.

For extra fun, visitors can also pit themselves against other people on the RDG’s interactive train driving experience, using points calculated on stopping accuracy and time taken for each driver to safely complete the virtual journey.

‘We Mean Green’ is a campaign organised by RDG and those visiting the stand will get the opportunity to learn more about how the rail industry intends to encourage getting more people and goods onto trains and off roads in a bid to help in the fight against climate change, for example:

• A single train removes up to 500 cars off our roads
• Every freight train removes, on average, 76 lorries from our roads
• Leaving your car at home and taking the train cuts carbon emissions by two thirds

With extreme weather becoming a more regular feature, the rail industry is working hard to keep the network resilient whilst attempting to encourage more people to travel by rail in a bid to support the environment.

Over the weekend, damage caused by fierce storms saw Network Rail and train operators work together to get people on the move once again with services getting back to normal from London Euston and London King’s Cross on Monday the 1st of November.

The rail industry recommends that people check their journeys before travelling and, if affected by disruption, to claim compensation.

Andy Bagnall, Director General of the Rail Delivery Group, said:

“With the eyes of the world on COP26, it’s crucial we highlight the vital role that rail must play in achieving net-zero by 2050. While rail accounts for 10% of journeys, it is responsible for just 1% of transport emissions. Our message is simple – travelling or transporting goods by train is a quick and easy way for people and businesses to go green and cut their carbon footprint.”
