Mirfield Station in West Yorkshire, is run by train operator Northern and volunteers are celebrating after they received awards from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
Volunteers from Friends of Mirfield railway station, and Mirfield in Bloom have been awarded with two Certificates of Achievement for Excellence in Gardening, Community and Environment at the It’s Your Neighbourhood awards which are part of the Society’s Britain in Bloom campaign.
The station looks brighter and full of colour after the volunteers hard work, with a meadow sown, planters filled with bee & butterfly friendly flowers and herbs that passengers can take to cook with at home, along with a light display in an underpass.
The volunteer’s work was praised by the judges as station looked “much loved and cared for” and the effort they have put in to create biodiversity.
Tony Baxter, Regional Director at Northern, said: “I’d like to thank all our volunteers who have created a beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.”
“Our community partners are the heartbeat of the railway and we’re extremely proud to work closely with them to deliver such a wide-ranging positive impact for the north of England.”
Christine Sykes of Friends of Mirfield Railway Station said: “All this not only cheers up Mirfield commuters, it pleases those passing through on the trains.”
