Progress on the revival of the Mid Wales narrow gauge line will continue with a major project this winter. The work is being carried out by volunteers from the Corris Railway Society.
At Corris, a new track layout with a traverser and new points is being installed. They will complete a loop that will allow locomotives to run round their trains, as they already do at Maespoeth Junction. New sleepers and track fittings have already been delivered.
The Corris ground frame is being refurbished in the railway’s workshops at Maespoeth Junction, whilst the traverser is being constructed by Statfold Engineering.
The modified layout will require a new platform to be built. That is part of a longer-term aim to build a new station with an overall roof, which was a feature of the original Corris station.
Work on the new track layout will begin after the two days of Santa Trains operation which will take place on December 11th and 12th. Santa train tickets can be purchased online from www.corris.co.uk
In the carriage shed at Maespoeth Junction, work is continuing on new-build carriage number 24. This will have First Class accommodation and an observation section. The flooring is complete and hardwood sections are being fitted to the outside of the vehicle.
During September, construction continued on the embankment South of Maespoeth Junction that will replace a lost section of the original trackbed. A drain to the river Dulas has been connected to the drainage layer below the embankment base. Debris from earlier site work has been cleared from the flood plain, and topsoil has been levelled in front of the stone-filled gabions at the base of the embankment. Completion of the embankment will eventually allow trains to run further southwards along the Dulas Valley.
Donations to assist with the work at Corris station and/or the Southern Extension embankment can be made online via www.corris.co.uk or cheques payable to Corris Railway can be sent to Corris Railway, Station Yard, Corris, Machynlleth, SY20 9SH. Please indicate for which work a cheque donation is intended.
