The 48624 Society has published their latest update on the overhaul of their London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMSR) Stanier Class 8F No.48624.
Boiler – Currently at Locomotive Maintenance Services (LMS) Ltd
The team has been on-site at LMS based in Loughborough, where work continues on separating the smokebox from the boiler barrel.
The bolts attaching both are being drilled out with a mag drill, which should hopefully mean the smokebox will be free soon.
Next, the Oxy-Acetylene cutting touch was fired up to start cutting the bolts from the ejector exhaust ring, following by removing the life expired tubeplate near the smokebox.
Further visual examinations of the boiler have shown that certain areas have extensive wear. In the front section of the boiler barrel, there is deep pitting in the bottom, which may mean a whole new front section is needed.
At the joints between the throatplate and boiler barrel, cracks can be seen, with further investigation required to determine how severe they are.
On a good note, the palm stays appear to be in good condition.
The locomotive’s rolling chassis and tender are located at the Great Central Railway‘s (GCR) Loughborough Locomotive Shed, where a lot of work has been done to remove components for storage and allow others to be assessed.
