London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is holding a 2021 charity auction, to raise donations for their partner charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM).

Back in 2020, LNER had a very successful charity auction in aid of CALM, where £41,000 was raised.

This was thanks to bidders paying record prices for the now-retired British Rail Class 43 High-Speed Trains (HST as the class is commonly known as), with No.43308 “Highland Chieftain”‘s nameplate fetching £13,900!

This year bidders will have the chance to purchase the remaining nameplates for:

  1. No.43274 “Spirit of Sunderland”
  2. No.43208 “Lincolnshire Echo”
  3. No.43257 “Bounds Green”

An online auction has been organised for Saturday 24th of July 2021 to sell the remaining nameplates.

CALM offer a life-saving service, working hard to reduce the number of death caused by suicides in the UK. With suicide being the biggest killer in men under the age of 45, the service CALM offers is vital.

LNER Managing Director, David Horne said: “Our historic nameplates have generated interest from around the world, as they are sought-after memorabilia that celebrates some of the regions along the historic LNER route. We hope the upcoming auction will help support our communities and raise much needed funds for our partner charity, the Campaign Against Living Miserably, which has seen record levels of demand for its services.”

CALM’s ECO, Simon Gunning said: “A lot of people have struggled through this pandemic, which has been reflected in the unprecedented demand for our helpline services. Since the beginning of lockdown the CALM helpline has answered over 177,000 calls and chats. That is a call for help every 61 seconds and it’s thanks to partners such as LNER, for their generosity and support that we can continue to be there for anyone who needs us, no matter what they’re going through.”

The proceeds of the auction will be added to more than £300,000 LNER has already raised for CALM since the start of the partnership in October 2018.
