Train Operator Southeastern has announced that all 36 of its Class 376 Electrostar trains are to have an extensive interior and exterior refurbishment.

The major upgrade will be undertaken in partnership with the train’s manufacturer Alstom and leasing company and Eversholt Rail.

The refurbishment is part of Southeastern’s plan to upgrade its wider fleet, a £27 million project to refurbish Southeastern’s Class 395s high-speed trains.

By the end of last year, 23 out of the fleet 29 had undergone a complete full interior refurbishment with new seats and carpets, and installation of LED lighting and USB at-seat charging points.

The announcement comes after 30 City Beam trains were introduced onto Southeastern’s Metro routes to provide a better and more reliable service.

External work is being carried out at Ashford Maintenance Centre, and includes a new blue livery and fitting LED lighting, with the first units being outshopped in the next few months.

Later this year, Grove Park depot will carry out interior upgrades, including refurbished seats, at-seat USB/power sockets, and a full re-paint, with the first units due to be completed by the end of this year.

An Alstom spokesperson said the project is a testament to Alstom’s commitment to innovation and excellence in supporting operators and improving passenger experience across the UK rail network.

A refreshed, modernised fleet with enhanced passenger amenities and operational efficiency will ensure these Derby-built trains continue to provide reliable and comfortable journeys for Southeastern’s customers.

In November 2024 it was announced in that an extra 13 Class 377 trains would operate on Southeastern services after being transferred from Govia Thameslink Railway.

They have the advantage that they are more reliable than the older Networker fleet and provide a better onboard experience. A procurement is in process to replace the fleet of Networkers with new or upgraded trains.
