To make it easier for passengers to pay for their rail travel, ScotRail has introduced a new pay-as-you-go ticketing app, named Tap&Pay.
Initially available for travel in the Strathclyde area and routes between Strathclyde and Edinburgh, the Tap&Pay app will avoid the need for passengers to buy their tickets before they travel. If the initial roll-out is successful, ScotRail will consider introducing the app. more widely across its network.

The app. enables easy, ticket-free travel through a single-use barcode, and is already available for downloading from app stores,
When a customer uses the app, it generates a single-use barcode that can be scanned at ticket gates and on mobile devices in the same way as ScotRai’s existing mTickets. After the barcode has been scanned, the app. logs customers’ and identifies the origin and destination stations using location mapping.

When a customer taps out at the end of a journey, the app will automatically calculate the best available fare based on the journey made and time of travel. People who make multiple trips on the same route over a week will never be charged more than the cost of a weekly season ticket.
The Tap&Pay app is only available for use on ScotRail services. Customers may find that they can obtain better value fares by booking tickets in advance, such as through Advance fares, split ticketing, Flexipasses, or monthly and annual season tickets, which can be purchased, stored and used on the ScotRail app.
