Following on from the Christmas and January disruption that has taken place on the South Western Railway Network in the last month, have issued another warning for travel disruption affecting the first two Sundays in early February.

Trains along the south coast to Portsmouth and the South Western main line heading to and from London Waterloo are set to see two days of disruption.

Network Rail will be replacing points, track and conductor rails between and , which will cause severe disruption towards the northern end of the South Western main line, with train services that normally run from the capital to Portsmouth, Weymouth and Exeter being diverted or starting and ending their journeys at or Basingstoke.

The work carried out will reduce wear to the rails and wheels of the trains which will provide customers with a smoother ride as the track layout will be improved, which will hopefully lead to less wheel slip caused by the trains when accelerating after crossing the points.

Engineering work is also set to take place around Portsmouth over the same two Sundays with trains also being diverted.

Amendments to SWR Train Services

Throughout both Sunday the 2nd and 9th of February, trains from Waterloo to Weymouth will be diverted and will add an extra 30 minutes to the usual journey time.

Trains from Waterloo to Exeter St David’s will also be diverted at the London end, adding 30 minutes to the Journey time.

Some of these services will start and terminate at Basingstoke. Stopping trains that usually run all stations from Waterloo to Alton and Basingstoke will start and terminate at Woking, running on an hourly service.

On Sunday the 2nd of February, trains that normally run from Waterloo to Poole and will be diverted adding half an hour to the journey time, these trains will call at Farnborough with the train terminating at Poole.

Amended services will operate between Eastleigh and Portsmouth Harbour, while services from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford will also be diverted with some services starting and terminating at Woking.

On Sunday the 9 of February, trains from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour via Eastleigh will terminate at Fareham with buses replacing trains between Fareham and Portsmouth Harbour, while trains from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour via Guildford will terminate at Havant, with buses replacing trains between Havant and Portsmouth Harbour. Both trains will also be diverted at the London end to enable them to reach the capital.

Amended timetables of revised and amended services can be found on the Southwestern Railway webpage using the journey planner or on the National Rail website.

“We’re once again advising customers to plan ahead, this time if they’re intending to travel on our services on Sunday 2 and Sunday 9 February.

With engineering work continuing in the Wimbledon area, and a six-day closure starting in the Portsmouth area, many of our services will be revised, diverted or replaced by buses.

When this vital maintenance is completed, our customers can expect better journeys and a more reliable railway. We appreciate our customers’ patience and once again would like to encourage them to check before travelling.”

Peter Williams, South Western Railway’s Customer and Commercial Director
