With New Year’s Eve just one day away, Network Rail has issued travel advice as thousands are expected to descend on the capital as many high-profile celebrations take place across the city including the sold-out fireworks display on the Thames.
Passengers intending to travel to London on Tuesday, December 31st should allow plenty of time to complete their journeys and plan ahead, as stations and trains across all railway company networks are predicted to be busier than usual.
Network Rail is reminding passengers that London Liverpool Street station will be closed on New Year’s Eve as track renewal work through Bishopsgate Tunnel is taking place. London Liverpool Street will reopen on Thursday, January 2nd.
Those travelling into London from the North East are being made aware that with the closure of London Liverpool Street, all Greater Anglia services will be terminating at Stratford, tickets bought in advance for a Greater Anglia service to London Liverpool Street will be accepted between Stratford and Liverpool Street on the Central and Elizabeth Lines.
Stansted Express trains will start and terminate at Tottenham Hale.
London Overground services will start and terminate at London Fields. Overground passengers are requested they change onto the Victoria Line at Walthamstow Central or Seven Sisters stations. While TfL buses will also be running to take passengers into the city.
Throughout New Year’s Eve night passengers are advised to keep informed about train services in and around the capital when it comes to heading home after 12 am, this can be done by using the National Rail Enquires website.
Several Train Operating Companies (TOCs) are running extra trains before 1 am on the morning of New Year’s Day. Those who do head back home from London between 12 and 1 am must be prepared to expect busier stations and train services.
“We want everyone celebrating New Year’s Eve in London to have a fantastic time, including being able to get home smoothly.
We know that a lot of people will be travelling home after the festivities, and we’d urge them to plan their route ahead of time, including knowing what time their last train home is.
Passengers can keep up to date with the latest travel information by visiting National Rail Enquiries or their train operator’s website.”
Helen Hamlin, Network Rail’s director of system operations
“The majority of the TfL transport network will operate this New Year’s Eve helping customers make the most of their evening in the capital. Most TfL services will operate throughout the night into New Year’s Day making it the easiest, safest and most affordable way to get around the city. We do ask that customers check before they travel as some planned works are taking place.”
