Transport Secretary Louise Haigh has today resigned as Transport Secretary.

The MP for Heeley says that she is resigning over an issue surrounding a mugging that took place in 2013, where she told police that a phone had been stolen, but this later turned out to be at her home.

Her resignation comes a day after the transport bill to bring the railways into Government ownership was given Royal Assent.

Responding to the news, Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said “Thank you for all you have done to deliver this Government’s ambitious transport agenda. I know you still have a huge contribution to make in the future.”

  1. This is gutting! I thought she had made a good start and seems to have some vesture of her brief and enthusiasm for it. I was very surprised she has resigned on something that has been admitted and disclosed.

  2. How odd. A disclosed, spent conviction which could very well be a result of confusion after a mugging rather than any premeditated fraud shouldn’t debar a person from high office.
    There’s something else behind this.
