Britain’s railway stations are gearing up for the World Cup of Stations 2024, a contest that highlights the significance of railways in bolstering communities, businesses, and the economy.
Forty-eight stations are contending for the title, with this year’s spotlight on the businesses that transform stations into crucial community centres, stimulating local economies.
The Rail Delivery Group is hosting a competition where the public will vote for the station boasting the best local businesses across England, Scotland, and Wales.
Additionally, a bonus round will include stations nominated by the Community Rail Network, which are acknowledged for fostering local engagement, social inclusion, and encouraging sustainable travel.
Stations will compete in a three-day knockout tournament, with the semi-finals taking place on 17 October and the grand finale on 18 October.

Last year, Wemyss Bay in Scotland was crowned the winner, with more than 72,000 votes cast. This year, the competition intensifies as stations from across the UK step up their game. The nominees, featuring everything from quirky coffee shops to independent retailers, demonstrate that there’s much more to local stations than meets the eye!

According to a report by the Rail Delivery Group, rail travel annually contributes approximately £23 billion to local high streets near departure stations, with independent businesses receiving a £9 billion boost.
On average, customers spend £32 each time they leave their local station, supporting the nearby shops and businesses.
With over 70% of people regarding a train station as crucial to their local economy, the World Cup of Stations 2024 offers a perfect chance to recognize the significant contribution these centres make to our towns and cities.
