has issued an update on work to provide step-free access to trains at station, including alerting passengers to a six-month closure of the station’s subway.

Its engineers will install two new lifts, in a project costing several million pounds and supported by the government’s scheme.

The lifts will enable passengers with reduced mobility, prams or heavy luggage to access platforms 1 and 2 without using any steps.

The improvement work began in January 2023, but had to stop seven months later, when engineers installing the new lift shafts discovered Victorian-era foundations.

After redesigning the project, Network Rail resumed its construction work in spring this year, preparing to install the lifts. This has involved working on the platforms, clearing vegetation, surveying land and buildings, and moving utility services.

As they enter the second phase, engineers will now start working in and around the subway between the two platforms.

The subway will close for at least six months from today (Friday 6 September). There will be a diversionary route for passengers to get from one platform to the other. This will be clearly signposted and will take six to eight minutes to walk.

The work will take place during the day and overnight, and will include dismantling parts of the station building and roof.

Engineers will also remove the stairs and install the lift shaft bases, then install a new staircase and rebuild the station building and roof.

Network Rail and train operator are working together to minimise to passengers and the local community.

They have sent letters to local residents and held a drop-in session at the station on Thursday evening to discuss the project.

During the work, safety patrollers will be available at the station, helping passengers to follow the walking route. Network Rail hopes that their presence will also deter railway trespassers.

Chiltern Railways station staff will be available in the mornings, between 6.25am and 12.55pm Monday to Saturday.

Network Rail is asking anyone who witnesses trespass or other dangerous behaviour to report it to station staff, text the British Transport Police on 61016, call 0800 40 50 40 or, in an emergency, dial 999.

It is also reminding passengers that they can plan their journeys on the National Rail website.

“This is an important next phase of our work to provide passengers with step-free access between platforms 1 and 2 at Warwick station.

“We have to close the subway to carry out his work, but it’s been planned to be completed as safely and quickly as possible. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and urge passengers to follow the clearly signed diversionary route.”

Joe Flynn, scheme project manager for Network Rail

“I would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while work is carried out to install new lifts which will improve step-free access at Warwick station.

Andy Camp, commercial and customer strategy director at Chiltern Railways
