Local authorities are poised to sanction a £96 million funding package for the construction of the new Baltic station, in continuation of Mayor Steve Rotheram’s efforts to enhance rail connectivity throughout the Liverpool City Region.

The investment is set to finance the new station as well as enhancements to active travel and nearby public areas, buoyed by considerable backing from a recent public consultation.

The forthcoming Liverpool Baltic station, which will be situated on ‘s Northern Line, is poised to cater to one of the city’s most vibrant quarters, recently dubbed the 11th coolest neighbourhood globally by Time Out magazine.

The Liverpool Baltic project encompasses plans for step-free access from street level to trains, passenger waiting areas, accessible restrooms, secure bicycle parking, and enhanced connections to local walking and cycling networks.

These improvements are designed to promote the use of public transportation, thereby aiding the region in achieving its climate objectives.

I’ve always said that a world-class transport network is key to unlocking the full potential of our region – and that’s exactly what we’re building. This new station at Liverpool Baltic is just another step on the journey towards making our Merseyrail system bigger, better, and more accessible for everyone.

The development capitalizes on the triumph of the £80 million Headbolt Lane station in Kirkby, inaugurated last year.

This station is now on the Merseyrail network, served by innovative battery-powered trains, marking the network’s first expansion in a generation. Plans for further expansion are underway.

Additionally, the Mayor has pledged to create three new stations at Daresbury, Woodchurch, and Carr Mill, with construction expected to commence before the start of 2030.

The necessary £96 million for the station is part of the £710 million allocated by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) for significant transport initiatives across the city region.

Additionally, this month’s Combined Authority meeting will address funding for a range of active travel projects.

  1. I wouldn’t mind if it was called Liverpool Parliament Street or Liverpool Riverside station. But Liverpool Baltic does sound like a nice name for a new station on the Merseyrail Northern Line. As the new station is to serve Baltic Triangle in Liverpool.
