One of the world’s oldest golf tournaments, The Open, is taking place from 14 to 21 July 2024.
Known outside the UK as the British Open, it will be played for the 152nd time.
This year the competition is to be played at The Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire.
It will celebrate 101 years since the course first held the Open championship and will be the 10th time that this particular course has hosted the event.
The event attracts many spectator’s from around the world as the world’s best golfers bid to win one of golf’s major trophies.
Hundreds of participants take part, from new budding amateur golfers to former world number ones who are still playing to entertain the crowds, some at the age 80.
Additional ScotRail trains will be running from both Glasgow and Ayr to the station at Troon situated about 1 mile (20-minute walk) from the golf club.
Travel tickets are now available for purchase in advance of the event which starts proper on Thursday 18th July . Spectators are reminded they can book tickets early to secure the best prices and ensure availability.
In addition to extra trains, Scotrail is working in partnership with Stagecoach in putting on a shuttle bus service to take passengers to the Golf course from the station.
Travel on these buses will require an extra ticket to use the GolfLink shuttle service.
Tickets for the bus can be brought at stations, on board the trains and via Scot Rails website and app. If using the website and app to book tickets, make sure you select ‘GolfLink (QGL)’ as the destination when using the journey planner.
This will include purchase of both the train and shuttle bus tickets. Buying tickets in advance will save buying them on the day and reduce queuing at booking offices and ticket machines at stations.
Extra staff will be on hand to aid and escort passengers as they travel to and from the venue.
Passengers that require travel assistance are urged to book in advance, though due to the busy nature of the event and the extra staff on hand at Troon during the week, it isn’t mandatory.
Customers are also reminded that carrying and the consumption of alcohol is prohibited on Scotrail services and at stations.
Passengers are also reminded that Troon station is currently being rebuilt after a fire that took place there in 2021, meaning normal entrances and exits may be closed and alterative routes to and from the platform’s maybe in use.
The car park at Troon is closed for renewal and upgrade works and it will not be open for the event. Limited spaces are available in the west side car park but these will be reserved for Blue Badge holders only.

Isn’t this a golden opportunity for rail unions to mess it up.
