Next Saturday, 6 July, the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway in Buckinghamshire is holding a Diesel Day starring Class 37 No. 37227, and to provide extra effort it will haul five carriages instead of the usual four.
Visitors can join trains at either Chinnor or Princes Risborough stations. The journey gives travellers a panoramic view of the Chiltern Hills and the Vale of Aylesbury and Red Kites can often be seen whirling overhead.
Trains depart for a 7½-mile round trip from Princes Risborough at 9.55, 11.20, 12.30, 13.50, 15.15, and 16.35, and from Chinnor at 10.45, 12.05, 13.15, 14.45, and 16.00.
From Chinnor, the train passes Keens Lane Crossing, known locally as Donkey Lane, from when pack animals brought timber from beech woods to the railway for transport to High Wycombe.
There are two halts on the line, at Wainhill Halt and Bledlow Bridge Halt, and for much of the journey, the line runs parallel to Icknield Way. At Princes Risborough, the station is shared with Chiltern Railways trains.
Refreshments are available from the Station Café at Chinnor, which will be serving a selection of freshly made sandwiches and baps, hot sausage rolls and pasties, homemade cakes, biscuits, crisps etc., as well as teas, coffees, assorted drinks, juice cartons and bottled water.
On Diesel Day, tickets are issued as Day Rovers, which allow travellers to travel as often as they like on any train all day long.
Adult tickets cost £16, concessions £14, residents living in Postcodes OX39 or HP27 £11, and aged 3 to 15 years £1 Children under 3 travel free.
Visually impaired travellers or those with a carer can travel with their accompanying carer for a total cost of £16.00.
Residents need to show proof of local address, and concessionary cardholders need to bring their cards with them. Other concessionary cards accepted are HRA Privilege Cards, TOC/Network Rail Privilege Cards, Members Cards and Directors Passes.
Although Diesel Day's are restricted to diesel locomotives, the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway runs steam locomotives on most other operating days. This year it has obtained the services of Great Western Railway steam locomotive Prairie tank No. 4555, and Great Western Railway Manor Class No. 7820 Dinmore Manor will be visiting the line in September.
Wainhill and Bledlow Bridge halts are currently not available for use by passengers.
