The automated Paris Metro Line 14 has been successfully modernised by Siemens Mobility and RATP (Régie autonome des transports Parisiens).
This is the first-ever upgrade from a computerised metro line to the latest generation GoA4 driverless Trainguard MT CBTC system.
Siemens joined an international consortium, consisting of RATP Dev, Alstom, and ComfortDelGro, who had been awarded a contract by Île-de-France Mobilités (IdFM), which is the public transit authority of the Greater Paris region, to operate and maintain Line 15 South of the Grand Paris Express back in 2023.
This new system was implemented over 6 years ago while passenger services were still operating. The success of this system has allowed for more efficient and reliable services over the line, which has been doubled in overall length to 28km.
The upgrades now allow headways along the line of only 85 seconds and enable passengers to travel from Orly Airport to Paris City Centre in just 20 minutes and from the northern business districts of Saint-Denis Pleyele to Paris Orly Aiport in 40 minutes.
The overall capacity of the line is now expected to be over one million people per day. Over six years, over 250 Siemens Mobility Engineers helped to work on this project with over 500,000 man hours.
The CBTC system is the leading high-performance CBTC solution to upping capacity on networks through improving reliability, and energy consumption and allowing operators to run more trains closer together.
It has been deployed over five continents, 25 countries, 49 cities, 56 customers, 96 metro lines, 3,000 km of lines, and 4,351 equipped trains.
It is hoped that with this improved reliability and increased capacity, line 14 will become the backbone of the future Grand Paris Express Network.
This is a new 200km automatic high capacity, rapid transit network currently under construction in the Ile-De-France Region with Siemens Mobility being tasked to automate lines 17, 16, and 15.
