Rolling stock manufacturer has announced that it has delivered the first of 22 three-car sets to the Indian city of Pune.

Close to Mumbai, Pune is located in the western Indian state of Maharashtra and currently boasts a two-line system with a total length of 24km.

Pune’s system is young; the first line opened in March 2022 and the network is continuing to grow.

The new sets made by Alstom will be used on the new elevated line 3, which will have a total of 23 stations and connect the city’s IT zone, Hinjawadi, to its Central business district, Shivajinagar.

Each of the sets, called Metropolis metros, use Alstom’s latest technology and can carry up to 1,000 passengers at a time and reach speeds of up to 95 km/h.

Contracts for the rolling stock, and electrical and mechanical works for Line 3 were awarded in 2021 and the line is set to begin operation in March 2025.

The Metropolis sets bound for Pune have been built entirely in India, at Alstom’s Sricity plant, located in the east of the country.

Alstom has also manufactured and supplied rolling stock to India.

Projects in recent years include Movia trainsets for Bhopal-Indore metro project and Prima T8 double-section locomotives for Indian Railways.

Currently, over 80 metro systems all around the world use Alstom’s Metropolis trains, from Sydney to Caracas and from Vancouver to Manila.

Metropolis sets come in different configurations, from two cars to ten cars, and can either be manned or driverless.
