The windows of Huddersfield Station will be lit up in with blue lights tonight (Friday, 17 May) from 7pm to 11pm.

This is in order to raise awareness of Neurofibromatosis, a neuro-genetic condition that can result in gene mutations which lead to tumours developing on nerve endings.

The event at Huddersfield Station is part of a global initiative, called Shine a Light.

This will see over 500 well-known buildings across the world turning on blue lights, including the National Theatre in London and Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey.

Moreover, TransPennine Express staff at Huddersfield will also be providing information booklets and cakes to visitors who come to see the lit-up station.

In recent months, the operator has also been doing work to raise awareness of autism and mental health issues.

It is hoped that the Shine a Light charity event will give those who may have never even heard of the disease a chance to understand it and the impact it has on those affected.

It is being led by Nerve Tumours UK, an organisation which works to support those suffering from all types of neurofibromatosis, namely Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), NF2-related- Schwannomatosis (NF2), and Schwannomatosis (SWN).

We’re really proud to be able to support such an important cause. I didn’t know much about NF until we decided to participate in the event, so it’s already raised awareness to one new person!

TPE colleagues will be around to hand out cakes, leaflets with information about NF, and to have a have a chat with anybody coming to see the station windows lit up blue.
