The Mid Suffolk Light Railway, often known as ‘The Middy’, has lined up many attractions for its ‘Middy in the 1940s’ event during the Spring Bank Holiday weekend.

‘Middy in the 1940s’ is an annual event at the Mid Suffolk Light Railway, and is being held this year on Sunday, 26th and Monday, 27th May when visitors to Suffolk’s award-winning and only standard gauge heritage railway can step back into history.

As well as railway attractions, there will be a full programme of displays, military vehicles, and live music.

Memorabilia, visiting ‘soldiers, sailors and airmen’, and possibly a famous face or two will help to bring history alive.

A special attraction will be a collection of historic World War II memorabilia and artefacts from the Mendlesham USAAF 34th Bomb Group Museum.

On Sunday, 26th May, weather permitting, visitors can witness a flypast by a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire flypast and on Monday, 27th May, they can enjoy performances of Dad’s Army.

On both days, singer Sarah Mai will provide live entertainment.

Steam-hauled trains will run on both days, which visitors can ride as often as they like.

Haulage will be by the railway’s 114-year-old resident locomotive Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 saddle tank Caledonia Works No. 1219.

Throughout the weekend, the Museum, Restoration Shed, and souvenir shop will be open, as well as the cafe and Middy’s real ale bar.

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway operates from Brockford Station, Wetheringsett, near Stowmarket in Suffolk.

Visitors who don’t wish to drive to the event, the Eastern Counties Bus Preservation Group will be running a free shuttle bus service from Stowmarket Station to Brockford Station on both days.

Following ‘Middy in the 1940s’ there are open days every Sunday and Bank Holiday from 2nd June to 1st September. Among special events are: Land Rover Day on 7th July; Model Mania & Hornby Collectors Days on 25th and 26th August’ and Santa Specials in December.
