As part of the Access for All programme, £4m step-free access work is being undertaken at Anniesland station in Glasgow, with work coming along well.

Anniesland is the latest of five stations to receive step free access that the Department for Transport has funded in Scotland.

The project that started last October will see Network Rail engineers install lift towers from street to platform to bridge level.

Work undertaken so far has seen the closure of the footpaths and the inside eastbound lane of Great Western Road under the railway bridge, along with the parking bays.

This has enabled work to stabilise and strengthen the embankment, and the installation of lift shaft foundations, which has involved huge sheets of steel being piled into the ground.

Once complete, the lifts will enable those with mobility issues and those travelling with luggage, pushchairs and bikes a smoother transition between the platforms and street level.

Presently, platforms 1 and 3 are accessible by footpaths, while platform 2 is accessed by a stairway from a car park on Hershell Street. The existing footbridge will stay in place until the works are completed.

“We are pleased with how work is progressing at Anniesland station.

“Due to the proximity of the railway and platforms to the road, a traffic management system has been in place to allow our engineers to work safely and with enough room for the necessary equipment.

“We’re keeping station users and pedestrians safe by creating a safe walking route between platforms, for those who do not or cannot use the station footbridge. We urge everyone to continue to follow the signposts in place and adhere to this route.”

The next stage of the project is the installation of linkspans for the walkways and lifts, which have all been surveyed and accepted by AfA. These will be installed later this summer.

Local residents and users of the station are being updated with letters on the works as they continue with key dates when major works and temporary closure of the station or surrounding roads will happen.

Amanda added: “While we understand our work to improve accessibility at Anniesland station has caused some inconvenience, we hope everyone living nearby and using the station is looking forward to the benefits that the new lifts will bring to the people of Anniesland and surrounding areas.
