A long-term plan for station and the surrounding Waterloo and South Bank area has been revealed in ambitious redevelopment proposals.

In the London Waterloo Station vision, Lambeth Council and along with many partners set out how they want to improve both the station and the surrounding area so that it is safer and easier for people to move around, make use of active travel, and support the local economy.

Among the suggested improvements and upgrades are:

  • Better Connections, with more walking and cycling routes, and better gateways to the station and the City.
  • A redesigned northern concourse to improve the areas around that entrance to the station.
  • A new southern concourse to improve passenger flow through the station and reduce congestion on the existing concourse.
  • Improved public spaces.
  • Nearly 2,000m2 of new green space around the station, including planting hundreds of new trees.
  • An improved bus and taxi interchange by relocating some existing bus and taxi stops.
  • Creating new workspace, retail and leisure offerings, and more employment opportunities.

Grimshaw Architects was commissioned to develop the division by Network Rail and Lambeth Council, in partnership with South Bank Employers Group, South Bank BID, We Are Waterloo and local developers HB Reavis, Bourne Capital, LCR, and SB Royal Holdings.

The vision will start with a programme of short-term investment, followed by further engagement with residents, businesses, and stakeholders to refine the proposals.

Elsewhere in Greater London, a sculpture of a local resident aged 62 has been installed at Brixton station next to one of the same resident aged 26, and mosaics celebrating the work of the poet and painter William Blake have been installed at Surbiton Station,

“We are delighted to be working with Lambeth Council on an exciting long-term plan to transform London Waterloo station.

“London Waterloo is iconic, and one of the busiest stations in the country, and it is imperative this station continues to evolve to ensure it is a world class transport hub and meets the needs of the millions of passengers that use the station each year, today and into the future.

“This a significant but first step towards realising this ambition, and there is a great deal of work to do to progress this forward and find funding. We look forward to working with our wider partners, passengers, local businesses and organisations, and the local community, as we refine these plans.”

Network Rail chair, Lord Peter Hendy of Richmond Hill
