LMS Black 5 No. 44871 is to haul part of the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express this Saturday, 17th February 2024.
Departing London Euston at 06:35, the train will start by being hauled by electric loco, 86259 Les Ross.
After departing London, the train will pass through Watford Junction (07:00), Milton Keynes Central (07:28), Rugby (07:54), Nuneaton (08:19), Crewe (09:16), Warrington Bank Quay (09:37), Preston (10:10) and Carnforth North Junction at 10:43, where steam loco 44871 is added to the train.
After being added to the train, 44871 will depart at 11:21 and will pass through Oxenholme Lake District (11:36) and Penrith North Lakes (12:15) before arriving into Carlisle at 12:37.
After time in Carlisle, 44871 will depart at 14:17 and will pass through Appleby (15:00), Garsdale (15:43), Ribblehead (15:57), Hellifield (16:18), Clitheroe (17:02), Blackburn (17:25) and Preston (Lancs) at 17:54, where 44871 will leave the train.
Once again hauled by 86259 Les Ross, the train will depart at 18:40 and will return to London via the same outbound route, passing through Crewe (19:29), Nuneaton (20:23), Rugby (20:46), Milton Keynes Central (21:23), Watford Junction (21:54) and London Euston at 22:22.

The Diesel acts as a generator for the train.
I wonder why steamers are often hooked up to modern diesel or electric driven trains. Is it to ease load and wear on steam drives or save track management/timetable complications?
