Over 500,000 journeys have been made from Robroyston station on the line between Glasgow Queen Street, Cumbernauld and Falkirk in Scotland in just four years since it opened.
A £14 million project to build a station at Robroyston in the northeast outskirts of Glasgow culminated in its official opening on 16 December 2019. Its opening had an immediate effect, with an initial average of 3,500 customer journeys per week, rising to around 4,200 this year.
After a challenging period during the COVID-19 pandemic, patronage recovered in 2022 when more than 140,000 journeys were recorded to and from the station, and has continued to increase with an enormous 58 per cent increase to 220,000 journeys for 2023.
Robroyston forms part of ScotRail’s commitment to net zero by providing a free park-and-ride facility that takes cars off the road and eases congestion into Glasgow city centre for travellers between Robroyston and nearby Millerston. The car park has 251 free parking spaces as well as 12 electric vehicle charging bays. The station has easy access to the M80 motorway and provides an ideal commuting option for both local residents as well as drivers travelling from further afield into Glasgow city centre.
Soon after the new station opened, in 2020 it won the Transport Team/Partnership of the Year prize at the Scottish Transport Awards and was also shortlisted in the RICS Social Impact Awards Scotland.
Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating four years of serving the Robroyston area with reaching the fantastic milestone of half a million customer journeys.
“The investment in Robroyston station, as well as the facilities it brings to the local area, is a perfect example of how we can encourage more people out of their cars and onto trains, as part of our commitment to net zero.”
