Northern has confirmed that it will not operate any train services on Saturday 30 September or Wednesday 4 October as the drivers’ trade union ASLEF takes strike action.

The operator has published a travel advice calendar (pictured) for Friday 29 September to Tuesday 3 October to show how the strike will affect services.

There will be no Northern services at all on Saturday 30 September, when ASLEF members go on strike as part of their ongoing campaign for an inflation-matching pay rise.

Services will also be disrupted on Friday 29 September and from Monday 2 to Friday 6 October, as drivers refuse to work overtime as part of their dispute.

Northern is warning of short-notice cancellation of trains and is advising passengers to check before they travel.

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “We apologise in advance for the significant disruption and inconvenience this action by ASLEF will cause to our customers.

“We hope to see a resolution to this issue in the near future and an end to the disruption these strikes cause.”

Mick Whelan, ASLEF’s general secretary, said: “Our members have not, now, had a pay rise for four years – since 2019 – and that’s not right when prices have soared in that time. Train drivers, perfectly reasonably, want to be able to buy now what they could buy four years ago.”
