Among the highlights of the steam gala was the presence of the renowned Pendennis Castle locomotive, a formidable rival to the iconic Flying Scotsman. The event was a magnet for railway enthusiasts, drawing them from across the country to the charming Epping Ongar Railway. This vibrant gathering of like-minded individuals fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared passion, further enhancing the overall atmosphere of the gala.

Marco Carrara, from the Railway’s Management Team, said: “The event surpassed our expectations, with an intensive service and star locomotive drawing the crowds to see and hear the engines hard at work on our challenging gradients. The volunteers can be proud of what they all achieved in showcasing what the railway has to offer, and it was a delight to see lots of happy, smiling faces not only filling the trains across all three days of the event, but also providing a boost to the local economy”.

Marco also stated: “The Railway, however, acknowledges that there were a number of issues that impacted our neighbours and local residents that we will learn from, and review what mitigations can be put in place for future events.”
