Stadler has signed a contract with transports publics genevois (TPG), which operates public transport in the Swiss city of Geneva, for the manufacture and delivery of 38 trams.

The new trams will be used on an expanded route network that is planned by TPG. TRAMLINK vehicles are scheduled to start operation in 2025, and the current contract includes an option for the delivery of up to 25 extra vehicles.

has previous experience of supplying TRAMLINKs to local authorities in Switzerland when it won a contract to supply ten TRAMLINK trams to Lausanne in 2021, whilst in 2020 it signed a £157m order to supply 80 TRAMLINKs to Milan in Italy.

The partnership between Stadler and transports publics genevois goes back more than 10 years, ever since Stadler supplied 41 TANGO trams in several batches.

The TRAMLINK vehicles are bi-directional, 44 metres long and 2.3 metres wide, and with a capacity of up to 250 passengers, they are perfectly suited to the TPG infrastructure. Each tram incorporates an air-conditioning system that uses the natural refrigerant CO2, which contributes to an environmentally friendly operation and promotes the climate plan adopted by the Geneva Cantonal Council.

By using a low-floor design, the trams are fully accessible and do not require the use of ramps or steps, and through their innovative bogies with continuous axles, the TRAMLINK vehicles operate quietly and comfortably.

There are separate standing and seating compartments for a pleasant feeling of spaciousness, which are enhanced by large windows that contribute to a high level of passenger comfort, whilst dedicated multifunctional zones provide storage space for wheelchairs and bicycles. Although based upon similar TRAMLINK models, the vehicles to be delivered to Geneva will have a special front designed especially for TPG.

Christian König, Deputy Head of Sales & Marketing of Stadler, said: “We are pleased that Transports publics genevois has once again chosen Stadler for the expansion of its vehicle fleet. The impressive TRAMLINK trams operate efficiently, ensuring a sustainable and comfortable travel experience. We would like to thank Transports publics genevois for their trust in us and look forward to successfully continuing our partnership.”
