In memory of three Northern employees, the Northern traincrew in Barrow have transformed disused land into a memorial garden.

The team, who were led by instructor driver Paul Thompson, worked to remove layers of brambles from the area and turn the space into a place to remember their friends.

The garden pays respects to three members of staff who have unfortunately passed away in the last two years.

To help the garden be transformed, Northern donated a seat and stone slabs and one of Northerns contractors ISS, helped to source materials required.

Further funds came from Barrow and Workington’s welfare, Jewson, Travis Perkins, JT Atkinson and a Just Giving page.

The garden officially opened in mid-September and has now fully bloomed with fruit and vegetables being grown in beds.

Paul said: “I’m proud to show everyone what we have achieved at Barrow with a dedicated traincrew, we have made a great area to sit and relax. Any railway employee past or present can visit to sit and chill there.”

Chris Jackson, regional director at Northern said: “I’m so proud of everyone who came together to create this wonderful space – it’s a beautiful tribute.

“It will provide moments of tranquility and support the health and wellbeing of all our colleagues.”
