Owing to their long-term work for environmental sustainability, Northern has been shortlisted for a National award.

The award, The National Rail Award for Environmental Excellence, is given to the organisation that are decarbonising and reducing environmental impacts the most.

To move towards their goals, Northern has collaborated with employees and suppliers to find new solutions and help both customers and employees reduce their impact.

Improvements included making sure waste is disposed of correctly through a measure called ‘waste standardisation’. They have worked with BIFFA to track waste levels to increase the efficiency of collections.

Alongside this, presentation teams are encouraged to recycle more paper by Northern who make a donation to charity of an employees choice for each of the recycling skips filled.

The winner of the award is to be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Thursday 15th September.
