An exceptional turnout is expected for the world-famous event and wants to encourage racegoers to:

  • Plan your travel and check before making your journey via http://www.nationalrail.co.uk
  • Allow extra time for catching your train home as later services are going to be extremely busy
  • Follow Network Rail’s motto of ‘Be safe, be patient, be kind’ when travelling

Figures revealed on Wednesday the 6th of April show that Saturday’s passenger numbers are going to be in excess of pre-pandemic levels.

Lime Street saw over 72,000 people use the station on Saturday the 2nd of April and the previous week was even busier with 81,000 people using it on Saturday the 26th of March.

The Saturday of the 2019 Grand National showpiece steeplechase saw 47,000 passengers make their way through Liverpool’s largest station.

With a trend of increased passenger numbers, the 2022 Grand National is expected to be busier than ever.

Kyla Thomas, station manager, said:

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming Grand National-goers back to Liverpool Lime Street for the first time in three years and it’s great to see more passengers travelling into the city at weekends.

“I’ve got three top tips for passengers travelling to : firstly, plan ahead and know what train you want to catch before the day of the races. Secondly, allow more time than you might do usually to get on the train – there may be queues. And thirdly, please respect each other and our staff while travelling – we want everyone to enjoy their rail journey to and from the races free from any bad behaviour.”

Extra staff will be available at Liverpool Lime Street to support passengers over the weekend.

The station team has planned this weekend for weeks in order to be ready to cater for the thousands of extra passengers.

A queuing system will be put in place for busier periods, but racegoers won’t need to wait too long as regular services will be operating to the racecourse.
