The Wensleydale Railway is recruiting a General Manager to replace the current incumbent who has recently retired.
The position is a full-time, permanent post and is based at Leeming Bar. It is both a challenging and rewarding role, and is a great opportunity for someone with management experience in a similar or related voluntary heritage organisation.
Although a railway background is desirable, it is not essential, but the railway is looking for someone with proven commercial, event management, and business skills.
They should also have the character and personality to actively promote and develop the railway.
The successful applicant will also have the ability to drive through change, whilst protecting and preserving the railway’s heritage and respecting and valuing the vital role of its volunteers.
Further information about the role can be obtained at https://wensleydale-railway.co.uk/jobs-at-the-wensleydale-railway/
Wensleydale Railway PLC is one of Yorkshire’s leading heritage railways, running through the heart of the Dales in North Yorkshire, and will celebrate its 20th year of operation in 2022.
The line consists of two organisations that work together to deliver a visitor attraction. The Wensleydale Railway PLC operates the railway on a day-to-day basis, and manages all staff (paid and voluntary), train operations, engineering, and commercial activities.
The PLC works closely with the Wensleydale Railway Association Trust, which is a registered charity with a shareholding in the company and owns some of the assets used in the railway’s operation. The Trust manages the recruitment of the highly valued volunteer and membership base, and funds a variety of projects undertaken by the PLC that further its charitable aims.
The successful applicant will build on and significantly develop the railway’s operations and infrastructure to safeguard it for future generations. The railway already runs several successful events, but is seeking to grow its visitor numbers at other times. There are approximately six paid staff (some part-time) and 340 registered volunteers, of whom about 200 are active in total.
