Work on a £2million investment has begun in at ‘s (EMR) Eastcroft train depot and is due to finish in June next year (2022).

The work will allow the depot to house more trains at the same time, more fuel pumps to be installed, and modernise the train cleaning facilities.

The depot plays a major role in the regional operations at EMR, as it delivers the bulk of the daily fleet maintenance for the current fleet of 69 trains.

Maintenance is rather complex, with four different types of trains known as class 156, 158, 170 and a limited number of Class 153s.

The fleet runs 251 services per day (increasing to 269 in December), with services running from Norwich to Liverpool and Crew to Cleethorpes.

The Eastcroft investment will not only allow the current timetable to be delivered but also provide extra capacity when additional three-carriage trains are introduced next year in 2022.

This major investment in increasing the capacity of the depot will provide more flexibility to help support customer services and help future development of the services.

Neil Bamford, Fleet Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We know how important a reliable and robust regional service is for our customers. Although the number of customers travelling with us is lower than it was before the pandemic, we are seeing more customers returning to our Regional services compared to Intercity.”

“That is why this investment in Eastcroft, at the very heart of our EMR Regional service, is so important.”

“It not only increases the capacity of the depot – it also helps to support the further development of EMR Regional services and will improve the service we can provide to customers, in the short, medium and long term.”
