The P2 Steam Locomotive Company (P2SLC) are have released their latest update on the construction of new-build London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) P2 Class No.2007 “Prince of Wales”.
Cylinders and Valves
Following the announcement that the P2SLC have selected Howco as contractor to manufacture the fabricated cylinder block for 2007, both companies have been working closely together to ensure components produced are the best suited for “Prince of Wales”.
The outcome of this collaboration has been redesigning one particular part.
This part is the cruciform exhaust ports, providing the path for exhaust steam from the cylinders to the blast pipe.
Due to the space available, the pipework has to be curved in to two directions at once. In order to produce the correct space, , a detailed Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawing is needed.
Thanks to Martin Shepherd, who spent countless hours drawing the cruciform exhaust ports, a one third test model was 3D printed, successfully passing tests.
Martin has now gone on to producing drawings for the cam box oil coolers and 12 valve spindles’ pumped lubrication, with 3D printed models to follow in due course with the help of Warwick University Manufacturing Group (WMG).
