Nexus, who own and manages the Tyne and Wear Metro, have introduced the Pop 19-21 card which is a Pay As You Go facility giving a 30% discount on each journey made.
The reduction made using the Pop 19-21 means that an all zone daily ticket is now just £3.40, previously using an adult pay-as-you-go card would have been £4.85.
The card is intended for students and young people falling into the 19 to 21 age group following research undertaken before the pandemic by Nexus which demonstrated the need for a discount product to encourage young people to use public transport.
Metro now offers free travel or smart card discounts for all of the age groups up to 21. Earlier in the year, free travel was announced for children aged 11 years and under when travelling with a fare-paying adult as part of the Take the Kids for Free offer, which was later made a permanent facility.
Nexus also offers a range of cheaper fares for older children and teens using the discount cards for Pay As You Go travel for 16 to 19 year olds using the Pop blue card which came online in 2018 and has provided 1.2million £1 journeys for young people.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “We now offer free travel or great value smart card discounts on Metro from birth into your twenties.
“We want young people to grow up with Metro as the clean, green way to travel for the rest of their lives and we have made it cheap and easy to do that. Children travel free with an adult until they are 11, young people pay no more than £1 until they are 18, and now benefit from a new 30% discount right up to age 21.
“We are always looking to provide the best possible value for our customers and this delivers that for many thousands of young people who live in Tyne and Wear and who use the Metro to get around.
“We spoke extensively to students and young people before the pandemic about what kind of products made them more likely to travel on public transport.
“They said that they wanted value and flexibility, and the Pop 19-21 card offers that to them. They can benefit from a 30% discount on every Metro journey they make.
“The introduction of this product coincides with universities and colleges returning and is ideal for anyone returning to higher education this month.
“This builds on our already hugely popular take the kids for free offer as we seek to ensure that people right across the communities we serve have access to affordable travel.”
