The Atlantic Group have published their July 2021 update on the building London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) H2 class No.32424 “Beachy Head”.

Over the past two months, many components have been sponsored, helping to drive progress forward. Many smaller parts have been produced in house, with these now awaiting fitting.

Boiler Cladding

One of the many new parts the group need to make is the boiler cladding. The team are currently working on manufacturing each panel, a task which can be difficult and slow to ensure each panel fits correctly.

Some panels have been produced by a contractor following drawings provided, but with many sections needing cutouts for washout plugs, handrails etc, the group have most panels ordered without any cutouts and are slightly larger so they can be cut down to fit.

Some sections have been cut with a grinder, allowing them to bent into space, with the cuts to be welded up afterwards.

Tender

The tender is roughly 95% complete mechanically, with testing and final checks needed before fit for service. Undercoats are being painted on, with topcoats and gloss to follow at a later date.
