The LMS Patriot Project has sent RailAdvent an update on the work that has progressed recently to build LMS Patriot No 5551 The Unknown Warrior.
At the quarterly Board meeting on the 31st July, a full report was submitted on the defects found on the driving wheels. Due to COVID, this was the first face-to-face meeting since January 2020. The Board has agreed the evidence showed that the wheels will have to be replaced.
Discussions are ongoing with Boro Foundry, who cast the wheels in 2010/11. This will most likely take a while as Boro Foundry completes its own investigations into what happened.
The driving wheels have left Riley & Son and have been sent to Boro Foundry to allow them to complete these investigations.
Whilst this is taking place, replacement casting options are being looked into, and news on this will be shared in due course.
The Princess Royal Class Locomotive Trust has completed investigation work on the chassis, and rectification work on this is being completed.
Preparation work has started which will allow work to be completed on a minor modification to the outside cylinders.
The tooling of the boiler side stays is now complete and now, the LMS Patriot Project has placed an order with Heritage Boiler Steam Services (HBSS) to install the transverse stays.
Another order has also been placed with Leaky Finders for the next phase of work on the tender axle box horns.
