The British Transport Police has said that they are currently attending an incident at Darwen station, near Blackburn in Lancashire, after a suspicious item was found.

Darwen station has been closed, and a cordon is now in place whilst the officers inspect the item.

A spokesperson for The British Transport Police has said, “We are continuing to respond to an incident at Darwen station. The station is closed, and a cordon is in place while specialist officers assess a suspicious item. Thank you for your patience while we respond.”

The incident means that trains between Bolton and Blackburn are cancelled, and the line is blocked.

Rail operator Northern is saying that their Manchester Victoria to Clitheroe services are being delayed at Bolton and Blackburn with Hall I’ Th’ Wood, Bromley Cross, Entwistle, and Darwen not being served.

Due to improvement works at Manchester Victoria, a spokesperson for Northern has said that trains cannot divert via Todmorden.

The rail operator has also confirmed that rail replacement buses will operate from Bolton at 20 minutes past and 50 minutes past the hour, and buses will depart Blackburn at 30 minutes past the hour and on the hour.

Passengers can use alternative services from Blackburn to Preston before changing for services to Bolton.

A spokesperson for Northern has said that disruption is currently expected until the end of service.
