The Standard Steam Locomotive Company Limited has sent RailAdvent an update on progress to build BR ‘Clan’ No. 72010 Hengist.
Work has progressed in a number of areas. The small components for the bogie lubrication system are being produced and taken into stock ready for assembly, which will begin once all of the machining work is complete.
The rear extensions to the frame have been ‘black bolted’ to the main frame, this has identified some minor machining issues and these are currently being corrected.
Once these are completed, this will enable the frame extensions to be aligned using laser equipment.
When the bolts have been torqued up to the right value, the group says it may be possible to move onto riveting the front and rear buffer beams into position.
The front buffer beam for 72010 Hengist is already in place with strengthening gussets in place.
This will not be riveted until the rear one is ready, which will reduce costs by having all the work carried out in one go.
Cleaning and storing components is continuing, with a number of items receiving a fresh coat of primer.
Geoff Turner, chief engineer, stated, “Progress is currently steady rather than spectacular, but much is being achieved. We have already carried out the design review for the trailing truck and have started fundraising to enable its construction’.
