The Bala Lake Railway (BLR) has published its latest update covering its activities from May 2021.
Hunslet works No.364 “Winifred”
Before being steam tested, Chief Engineer Rob Houghton has developed a new method to make the safety valves fit tightly to the top of Winifred’s firebox.
The two top fixed studs have been replaced by two bolts. This new setup held up very well and allowed the locomotive to successfully pass its annual steam tests.
New Bogies
The whole team in the engineering department has been assisting in producing new bogies for the carriage fleet at the BLR.
A pair have already been finished, and following testing, which was successful, have been fitted under a carriage.
After a short period of time in traffic, it was noted the ride was significantly smoother. On top of providing a better ride, upgrades have been made to the braking system, making it safer for users.
Working Parties
Teams of volunteers have been working across the railway on the weekends and mid-week days to carry out various tasks, from general maintenance on trees to renewing life expired timbers at crossing points.
