£16m worth of investments into Scotland’s Railway took place over Christmas and New Year with Network Rail engineers working around the clock.
Between Christmas Eve and the beginning of January work took place to replace 1km of track on the line north of Glasgow at Cadder. 12 sets of points were also renewed or refurbished.
Signalling and overhead power equipment were renewed and upgraded point heaters were installed to help prevent them from freezing up during the winter weather.
Other projects included upgrading the signalling at Greenhill Junction to the north of the City. In the south, Network Rail engineers worked around New Year’s Day and the weekend at Pollokshields East renewing junctions on life-expired track.
Track near Inverness station was relaid along with work in Edinburgh and Stirling on the track and signalling.
Kris Kinnear, Network Rail Scotland’s capital delivery director, said: “The projects delivered over the festive period will help make Scotland’s Railway more resilient and more reliable and are part of a £4bn investment being made in our network between now and 2024.
“Our engineers worked around-the-clock in very challenging weather conditions – including freezing temperatures and snow – to complete these vital enhancements which will provide long-term benefits for our passengers and freight customers.”

If electrification is still happening then maybe electrify the Glasgow South Western Line to East Kilbride, Kilmarnock, Stranraer and Dumfries. And Hitachi to manufacture more Class 385s so that they can replace the Class 158, Class 153 and Class 156 DMUs and transfer them to the north of Scotland.
