Train services are cancelled or are being diverted after a freight train derailed near Sheffield station. The train is blocking some platforms at the station.
Operators are warning passengers to allow for delays and cancellations this morning, and a rail replacement bus may be needed to complete your journey.
Disruption is expected to last until the end of the day at the earliest.
CrossCountry trains are currently able to serve Sheffield, but delays may be encountered due to congestion at the station.
Ticket acceptance for CrossCountry is in place with:
- East Midlands Railway between Derby and Sheffield and between Leeds and Wakefield Westgate.
- Northern on any reasonable route
- TransPennine Express on any reasonable route
East Midlands Railway trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich, but as with CrossCountry, delays may be encountered due to congestion at Sheffield due to reduced platforms.
An hourly service will now operate between Sheffield and London St Pancras.
East Midlands Railway ticket acceptance is in place with:
- LNER between Leeds and London (seat reservations are still required)
- TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street and Sheffield (these trains are being diverted)
- Northern between Sheffield and Nottingham, and between Sheffield and Manchester (also diverted)
Northern trains are being cancelled and may start and terminate early on the following routes:
- Leeds – Nottingham (a limited service is in operation)
- UPDATE 10:50: Trains will run as scheduled but may be some cancellations
- Leeds – Sheffield via Barnsley (operating between Leeds and Meadowhall)
- Leeds – Sheffield via Moorthorpe (trains will operate between Leeds and Meadowhall)
- Sheffield – Huddersfield (trains will run between Barnsley and Huddersfield)
- Sheffield – Lincoln (trains are cancelled throughout)
- Sheffield to Lincoln trains cancelled throughout but now replaced by road transport.
- Sheffield – Scarborough (in operation between Doncaster and Scarborough)
- Sheffield – Doncaster (no trains will run on this route)
- UPDATE 10:50: All trains cancelled and will be replaced by a bus on this route
- Sheffield – York (cancelled throughout)
- Sheffield – Manchester (will run as scheduled)
Due to lack of rail replacement buses, Northern is telling passengers DO NOT TRAVEL.
Northern ticket acceptance is in place with Sheffield Supertram.
UPDATE 10:50: Northern ticket acceptance now in place with:Â
- TransPennine Express between Doncaster and Sheffield
- East Midlands Railway between Sheffield and Nottingham
- CrossCountry between Leeds and Sheffield
TransPennine Express trains between Cleethorpes and Manchester Airport are able to run throughout.
Minor disruption may be encountered at Sheffield due to reduced platforms.

That does look very nasty. At least no one wasn’t hurt. Is the driver ok as a result of the derailment.
