Update: People have asked for clarification on the World First used in the title. The Mid Hants Railway has said, “we’re not the first railway to produce this type of event but the lighting system we use is entirely different to other railways as each individual light can be controlled separately to create numerous different effects and patterns, rather than the static rope lights used by others.”
The Mid Hants Railway (also known as The Watercress Line) has announced a new event this winter, Steam Illuminations.
Steam Illuminations is a unique and work-first digital LED train that creates a superb light show both on and inside the steam train. Each train will have thousands of controllable colour LED lights and wristbands.
The lights will be programmed to perform a light show with different colours and patterns that are stunning to see.
Each visitor is given an LED wristband to wear on the train and be part of the show and is a keepsake of the event when they take it home.
The event will start on the 14th of November 2020 and will run until the 3rd of January.
Trains will depart from Alresford or Alton and will complete a round trip back to the starting station.
Full details and booking of tickets can be found by clicking here to visit their website. Tickets will need to be booked in advance for this event. You can see their video below:-
General manager Simon Baggott said, “We are delighted to be bringing this unique event to the Watercress Line. It’s a wonderful experience the whole family can enjoy together and is sure to be an event to remember!”

Wow, The Mid-Hants Railway are so Lucky to take on Such A Spectacular Event of Many Colours.
It must be so interesting to see Steam Trains Brightly Lit in Many Colours… I Think it’s A Colourfully Bright-Hearted Idea… Steam Trains Roaming the Hampshire Countryside in Bright Lights of All Colours to Liven Up all Moods,
Especially as the UK Preservation Movement have gone through/dealt with this Pesky Pandemic.
I Do Wishfully Hope most other Heritage Railways Potentially Bring Up the Incredibly Bright-Hearted Idea of Such A Spectacular Event.
Good Luck to the Mid-Hants Railway (The Wtaercress Lne) on this Evocatively Bright Coloured Event.
It’s not a World First, they have been running these trains for years, and they deliver presents to those in need!
