The Great Central Railway (Nottingham) has announced that it has taken the difficult decision to cancel all train services until Easter 2021.

Over the past few months, the Office of Road and Rail, along with the Heritage Railways Association, have been coming up with ways on how railways can reopen safely for both staff and visitors.

The decision has been taken because it is unlikely that the GCR (N) will be able to cover their costs. This also means that their Santa Specials will not operate this year.

Phil Stanway – Commercial Director, said: “Whilst this is not a good situation to be in, we have to put the safety of our visitors and volunteers before anything else. We fully appreciate that this decision will cause some disappointment amongst potential visitors and as we receive no external funding, will hit us hard financially over what would be our busiest periods of the year. The decision has not been taken lightly, and we look forward to seeing you all on our trains again during 2021.”

However, some good news is that various sections of the railway have reopened, including their Cafe, Model Railway and Road Transport section. However, for the time being, the miniature railway will remain closed.

Whilst the railway is closed, improvements to many areas of the railway will be made, ready to welcome back visitors in time for Easter 2021.

  1. Such a shame the GCRnotts is not reopening this year but i can understand why, i hope all the staff and visitors and all that have supported the line stay safe through this bad time and we all meet up again at some point next year.

  2. Well I Never… So sorry to hear about the ‘Great Central Railway – Nottingham’ on not being able to Reopen back up and running anytime soon… I do hope they’re all keeping well out there.

I still hope to visit this interesting ex-Cross Country Heritage Railway ‘in-person’ someday,
Especially for when they do eventually reconnect with the other fellow preserved Great Central Railway at Loughbrough within the next 5 to 10 years.

Also, I still wonder if the GCR(N) may ever consider being double-tracked (with one Heritage Train passing another en-route along it’s own ex-Mainline Route, just like the other GCR between Loughborough & Rothley… That would be interesting/exciting too.

My heart still goes out to the GCR(N), it’s crews, volunteers and their very own fleet of locos & rolling stock in-between…

I Really Truly Hope they do Reopen back up and Running Come 2021.
