Colas Rail UK has confirmed that recent improvements to one of their tampers has been successful following recent trials.
Under the South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA), a partnership between Colas Rail along with Aecom and Network Rail, these firms are responsible for maintenance on tracks for the Western, Wales, Wessex, South East and Anglia areas.
The first renewal project the newly altered tamper could be used on were tracks running across the Stonehouse Viaduct near Stonehouse, Gloucestershire.
With social distancing measures in place, members of the Colas crew along with a team from the tamper’s manufacturer Plasser, to demonstrate the new equipment, started the renewal.
The key component in the upgraded tamper is a curved laser. The laser allows for locating and correction of any length of track of plain line sections and Switch and Crossing.
The setup ensures highly accurate placement of track. Following the successful use of the new equipment, the tamper will now be used on future renewals.
