The LMS Black 5 5025 Facebook page has posted an update on the overhaul of their London, Midland and Scottish Railway Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 ‘Black 5’ No.5025.
As can be seen from the photo, 5025 is looking almost like a complete locomotive apart from the new cab which will be refitted.
Most of the big and expensive tasks have been completed, such as new cylinders and boiler repairs, with mostly minor jobs left.
Once materials can be sourced and contractors hired in, refitting of copper pipework, new cab seats & flooring and other minor jobs can be completed, then leaving the final job of painting and lining out 5025, ready for entering revenue earning service.
The Watkinson Trust said: “A big thank you goes out to anyone or group who have supported the overhaul of 5025 to date, including Heritage Lottery Fund, Strathspey Railway Company, Strathspey Railway Trust and Strathspey Railway Association.”

I remember 5025 when in steam in the early 90s. I never thought that I would see it steam again. So pleased the Strathspey Railway and the dedicated crew have proved me wrong. Well done and congratulations to the SSR.
Black fives are my favourite steam locomotives.
Black 5s covered a lot of important routes and work during the steam era. They are still proving themselves today.
Well done Nathan.
