Alstom has announced that they have signed an agreement with ProRail the Dutch infrastructure operator for tests on shunting locomotives and Automatic Train Operation (ATO)

The tests will be for the highest level of automation in a shunting yard are to demonstrate how ATO trains can help to optimise operations.

A diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive, owned by Lineas, will be equipped with the technology. It will include environment recognition and obstacle recognition.

Tasks such as starting and stopping, pushing wagons, controlling traction and brakes and the handling of emergencies, will be fully automated by the system and to ensure safety during the tests, train staff will remain on board the automatic shunting locomotives.

Bernard Belvaux, Alstom Managing Director for Benelux said: “This project is paving the way for fully digitalised railway. These tests will help the European rail system benefit from an increase in capacity, reduced energy consumption and cost while offering higher operational flexibility and improved punctuality. This test is fully in line with Alstoms strategy to bring added value to our customers for smart and green mobility,”
