The Clan Project has released an update on work to build steam locomotive 72010 Hengist, including a return to work.

This month, the Monday Gang working parties at CTL Seal have resumed following the easing of coronavirus restrictions and were welcomed back by the regular CTL staff.

Policies by CTL Seal are being followed by the Monday Gang with regards to social distancing to stop the spread of the virus.

For this reason, not all team members have returned, with some still being restricted by lockdown rules.

Whilst people have not been able to attend in person; progress has continued at a steady pace through machining.

On entering the assembly shop on 8th June, team members were presented with the centre casting completely machined, with work progressing on the centre slide which is to be followed by the axle box guides.

Work has also been carried out to make sure that the lower edge of the mainframe plates were flat and square.

The castings at the bottom of the frame are now being refitted, which will be followed by the frame keeps. Once that is complete, the alignment of the machining of the hornguides will be completed.

After the frames have come back from the machine shop, the external frame components can be fitted, which includes the slidebar mounts and the motion brackets.

The good news is that all parts for the frame assembly are now complete, and are ready to assemble.

The Clan Project’s lead engineer, Geoff Turner commented, “It is an exciting time with much progress in evidence”.
