Proposals for the new railway station at have been submitted to East Cambridgeshire District Council.

is looking for permitted development rights to built the new station following an announced in September 2019 for £18.6m funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.

Putting Soham back on the rail network will provide locals with better connections, and will also support investment in the area.

The new station at Soham will include:

  • A 102-metre long platform to allow four-car trains to call there
  • Waiting shelters, information screens and lighting will be installed.
  • A stepped footbridge will connect the public right of way, which is designed for any lift installations in the future.
  • Drop off points, and a car park with 50 spaces and five disabled spaces will be constructed.
  • Ticket vending machines and cycle parking will be found on the station forecourt.

If consent is gained, construction is planned to begin in 2020, with the station being completed in 2022.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail’s route director for Anglia said ‘I am excited that we are taking this next step to make Soham station a reality in partnership with the Combined Authority. Providing a new station will re-establish that relationship with the Soham community that was lost in the 1960s, and I can’t wait to forge a new future together for the benefit of Soham.’

Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Mayor James Palmer said “Cutting through the endless delay has been a priority for the Combined Authority and it will be until the first passenger boards the first train. We’re here to deliver growth and this station will supercharge the whole local economy, reducing pressure and pollution on the A142, improving connections to Ely, Bury St Edmunds and beyond, giving residents wider access to jobs as well as opening Soham for business and tourism, and attracting further investment. We’re funding this project, and I will keep pushing for the earliest possible delivery.”

  1. About time that Soham deserves to have a railway station since the last one closed in 1965 because of the Beeching Axe cuts. And with the grant to build the new railway station that should been given the go ahead no matter what the outcome is likely to fall. And yes hopefully it should be completed in 2022. Wonderful news for Soham and Cambridgeshire.

  2. Brilliant news that Soham that will be having a new railway station. Since it last had a railway station before it was closed down in September 1965. Instead it will only have 1 platform with Greater Anglia trains operating local service between Ipswich/Bury St. Edmunds-Ely-Peterborough. That Greater Anglia trains will soon be serving Soham when the new railway station has been built and reopened.
