The East Somerset Railway (ESR) have confirmed that Great Western Railway 4500 Class No.4555 has arrived at their heritage line.

An arrangement between the Dartmouth Steam Railway and ESR will see 4555 based at the ESR for the next three years.

4555 will be running alongside home fleet engines Ivatt 2 No. 46447, GWR 5600 No.5637 and Barclay 0-4-0ST No.1719 “Lady Nan”.

4555 will haul both regular and special trains along the railway.

About 4555

Built in 1927 and starting life at Tyseley Deport, 4555 would undertake a number of different duties throughout its 38-year working life for the GWR and British Railways’ (BR) Western Region. Purchased from BR in working order in 1965, 4555 originally worked on the Dart Valley Railway, before moving to the Dartmouth Steam Railway in 1973.

Withdrawn in 2014 to undergo an overhaul, this was completed in January 2020 with 4555 painted in GWR Lined Green with “Great Western” on the Tank sides.
