Network Rail engineers are working around the clock at to complete repairs to the track, which is causing after six wagons derailed.

Most of the train services are expected to start running through Eastleigh from Monday.

Significant work is required to reinstate the infrastructure. However, the temporary track has been installed to enable the railway to be reopened while a full repair is planned and delivered.

This solution though means that not all trains can call at Eastleigh because some of the points are not in place – these allow the trains to move across the tracks to get to the right platform.

An internal review is taking place; this is alongside a RAIB investigation into the derailment, which is also taking place.

Current South Western Railway travel advice is as follows:

  • Any train that heads towards Southampton from Basingstoke will not be able to call at Eastleigh.
  • Trains will be able to call at Eastleigh in the London bound direction from Southampton ONLY.
  • Customers travelling to Eastleigh from the London / Basingstoke / Winchester direction will need to travel on a Portsmouth Harbour / Portsmouth and Southsea via Basingstoke service
  • Passengers can go to Southampton Airport Parkway and return on a northbound service.
    • This may entail an approx. 30 minute maximum wait at Southampton Airport Parkway but should be an average of 5-10 minutes.
  • Trains from Romsey to Salisbury via Chandlers Ford will be unable to call at Eastleigh
  • Services from Waterloo to Poole will be unable to call at Eastleigh
  • Some additional peak time services that will also be unable to call at Eastleigh or may have to be cancelled throughout.

  1. How long will it take to reopen the line at Eastleigh since the freight train derailed that caused lots of disruptions and resulted in passengers having to use replacement buses and finding another alternative route which would take longer to commute into London.
