The West Somerset Railway has announced British Railways (BR) Standard Class 2 (2-6-0) No 78018 as the third and final guest for their upcoming Spring Steam Gala.
British Railways Standard Class 2 (2-6-0) No.78018
Built in 1953 at Darlington Works, 78018 was allocated to a couple of BR Regions during its 13-year working career until withdrawal in 1966.
Rescued from Barry Scrapyard in Late 1978, restoration work was carried out across two sites, with owners Darlington Railway Preservation Society based at Darlington and later the Loughborough Standards Locomotive Group based at the Great Central Railway contracted to complete the restoration.
A part of the contract deal was for 78018 to be based at GCR for its first ten-year boiler ticket. Entering traffic in October 2016, 78018 has worked on GCR and been loaned to a few other lines.
